My beautiful VBAC

Khyah Kahmari Bliss is my fifth child. My third was a miraculous homebirth and my fourth had been scheduled to be a homebirth but my midwife went out of town and my rising blood pressure led me to be frightened into going to hospital and ending up with a c-section. I waited 9 years to have another baby and I healed my body and became the healthiest I have ever been in my life because I didn't want another c-section ever again. I worked with my midwife Heather Wilson of Nashville,TN and the Nurse Midwives of Vanderbilt Medical Center of Nashville; Sohele and Margaret in particular, and they assured me that we would work our hardest to make this VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Casearean) happen. Once labor began we labored quietly at home for a few hours. Heather walked with me up and down the back yard of my apartment and stopped and held me when I had a contraction. Once the contractions became hard and strong and regular we journeyed to the hospital where my midwife became doula and the hospital midwives took over. I walked around in a waiting room with my other children, my lover, one of my best friends and my midwife, waiting for a room to become available. After I got to my room and was able to undress labor continued in earnest. With each contraction I would moan and lean over, walking and standing as long as I could. I held the hands and face of my lover and he looked into my eyes. I kept my moans deep and low so that the contractions would be productive. When the contractions became more intense I raised my arms and hands up to the heavens and fell into the arms of my beloved. He stroked my hair and my arms and my thighs and told me how proud he was of me. When it was time to push, my eldest daughter and my lover held my legs for me while my midwife turned doula prayed and my other midwife held back my cervix and allowed my son's head to slide into the world. It was such a powerful release; it was also a moment of calm and peace. I describe it to first time mothers as the moment when you go and claim the spirit of your child from the Ancestral Realms. Afterward, all who were present spoke about how beautiful I was while laboring, how lovely my moans were, how calm I remained even when labor became hard. I was surprised because I had felt out of control and as if I was screaming during labor, but I listened to the truth of all that were present and I had to admit that it was a deeply sensual and beautiful experience. My lover said that he found the birth arousing and that I was very sexy and extremely beautiful throughout labor. I have attended several home births and natural hospital births and the truth is it is one of the moments in which a woman is the most beautiful, powerful, and attractive. You glow with an inner and outer light that is seductive and alluring. Birthing makes you happy to be a woman and it releases within you a Divine Power that you can gain nowhere else. “Orgasm: a pleasurable wave of tingling sensations through parts or throughout the body.  Hmmmmmm, sounds nice, right? Debra Pascali-Bonaro’s film, Orgasmic Birth, has a timely presence at a critical mass juncture in the world of birth. Talking heads dialogue, reveals shocking and alarming statistics about the fear-based approach to birth in the United States and beyond. Pascali-Bonaro’s collection of emotionally evocative images of labor/birth gifts the audience with poignant, powerful, portrayals of blissful, exhilarating, footage of women who believe in the power of their bodies, connections with their babies and trust in the process of labor and birth. Kris Liem, the editor of Orgasmic Birth, weaves Pascali-Bonaro’s courageous message with a brilliant sensitivity and optimally delivers her message. This is a film to see, to present, to talk about. It’s an important, ‘next step,’ because it gives women, babies and their partners, ‘permission’ to express what has been taboo for too long. As Ina May Gaskin has been quoted so many times, ‘the hormones that got the baby their in the first place are the same hormones to get the baby out.’”
