Every pregnant woman spends a good part of her pregnancy worrying about the upcoming birth. Book reading, Internet research and listening to other women’s birth stories quickly becomes an obsessive occupation for the mother-to-be, regardless of what culture or country she comes from.
I was no different. My pregnancy thus far had been full of surprises and had not given me the blissful, powerful feeling I always thought I would feel when I became pregnant. Instead I felt insecure, afraid and paranoid. And in addition to that, I was experiencing all of this outside of my country and culture and far from my family. An American living the expat life in Turkey for more than seven years, I thought I had experienced all forms of culture shock. After I became pregnant, I got to see my adopted homeland in a different light.
The documentary Orgasmic Birth by childbirth educator and filmmaker Debra Pascali-Bonaro was an instant hit when it circulated theaters last year. With a name like that, how could it not? After all, it has the O word in it, and many of us could not imagine such a thing during the pain of labor. We just had to watch it.
Now Pascali-Bonaro and Elizabeth Davis, a midwife and author, have written the complete How-To on getting the ultimate pleasure during childbirth.
They talked to me in advance of the release of Orgasmic Birth: Your Guide to a Safe, Satisfying, and Pleasurable Birth Experience, which goes on sale June 8, to dispel several myths right from the get-go:
Yesterday the Netflix arrived in the mailbox! I was excited to sit down and watch Orgasmic Birth. Jason, on the other hand, was...not as excited. Here's the trailer:
I was a little bit hesitant before watching this movie. I know that birth can be powerful, moving, exciting, and incredibly emotional. But, orgasmic?
The movie followed 7 families in their quest for natural, comfortable birth. Some women gave birth in pools, another in a shower, one on a deck outside, one in the hospital. I watched pretty much in awe as all of their births took place--they were all so "in the zone" and embracing what was happening to their bodies instead of freaking out and fighting it. It was beautiful! Most of the mommies didn't actually have "orgasmic" births, but said afterwards that they chose to embrace the sensations as pleasure rather than pain.

“Orgasmic Birth is different than other birth films you’ve seen — it focuses on the sheer physical joys of birth. While we all hear more than enough about the pain of birth, and pain is a real part of birth, we too often forget about the joy, the sexual and sensual pleasures to be had in birth. This is a film about women, about women’s bodies; powerful, ecstatic, glorious, orgasmic bodies! Watch and celebrate!”
