[Diary of an Expat Bride] Exploring birth together

Every pregnant woman spends a good part of her pregnancy worrying about the upcoming birth. Book reading, Internet research and listening to other women’s birth stories quickly becomes an obsessive occupation for the mother-to-be, regardless of what culture or country she comes from.

I was no different. My pregnancy thus far had been full of surprises and had not given me the blissful, powerful feeling I always thought I would feel when I became pregnant. Instead I felt insecure, afraid and paranoid. And in addition to that, I was experiencing all of this outside of my country and culture and far from my family. An American living the expat life in Turkey for more than seven years, I thought I had experienced all forms of culture shock. After I became pregnant, I got to see my adopted homeland in a different light.

6 Orgasmic Birth Myths

The documentary Orgasmic Birth by childbirth educator and filmmaker Debra Pascali-Bonaro was an instant hit when it circulated theaters last year. With a name like that, how could it not? After all, it has the O word in it, and many of us could not imagine such a thing during the pain of labor. We just had to watch it.

Now Pascali-Bonaro and Elizabeth Davis, a midwife and author, have written the complete How-To on getting the ultimate pleasure during childbirth.

They talked to me in advance of the release of Orgasmic Birth: Your Guide to a Safe, Satisfying, and Pleasurable Birth Experience, which goes on sale June 8, to dispel several myths right from the get-go:

documentary review: Orgasmic Birth

Yesterday the Netflix arrived in the mailbox! I was excited to sit down and watch Orgasmic Birth. Jason, on the other hand, was...not as excited. Here's the trailer:

I was a little bit hesitant before watching this movie. I know that birth can be powerful, moving, exciting, and incredibly emotional. But, orgasmic?

The movie followed 7 families in their quest for natural, comfortable birth. Some women gave birth in pools, another in a shower, one on a deck outside, one in the hospital. I watched pretty much in awe as all of their births took place--they were all so "in the zone" and embracing what was happening to their bodies instead of freaking out and fighting it. It was beautiful! Most of the mommies didn't actually have "orgasmic" births, but said afterwards that they chose to embrace the sensations as pleasure rather than pain.

Interview with Debra Pascali-Bonaro, filmmaker of "Orgasmic Birth"
I had the pleasure of interviewing filmmaker Debra Pascali-Bonaro about her recent documentary Orgasmic Birth (please see my review of the film if you haven't yet watched it). After you read the interview, please leave comments, questions, or thoughts about the film, the issues it raises, etc. I'd love to hear from you!

Stand and Deliver
Review of Orgasmic Birth I met the filmmaker Debra Pascali-Bonaro at the Lamaze Conference in October, and she gave me a copy of Orgasmic Birth to review. I’ve watched it three times and had three very different reactions to the movie. This isn’t a traditional film review; I won’t be giving a play-by-play of what happens in the movie. It’s more a written account of the conversations I’ve had with myself and with others as I’ve thought about the film. The first time, I watched it alone while sewing. I found myself close to tears during the birth scenes. They were beautiful and moving. The noises and the movements evoked a bodily memory of my own births. When I watched these women move and heard them give birth, my body knew what they were experiencing.

My Orgasmic Birth QUEST!! At 15 weeks pregnant today and this being my first pregnancy I have embarked on the somewhat intimidating journey of discovery about pregnancy and birth.  I have been lucky enough along the way to have had some amazing teachers already and this has prompted me to start this blog – to include all expecting mothers, mothers-to-be, partners, husbands, grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, cousins, sisters, generally all mothers or potential mothers & parents to seek more from their birthing experiences – to ask the hard questions and to ultimately heal ourselves, our babies, our partners and our families through the wonderful experience that is birth!

Watch List: Orgasmic Birth Women of earth, take back your birth!- Lonnie C. Morris, CNM, ND As an aspiring doula and having grown up with a mother who was a licensed midwife, I have seen a myriad of birth videos. I would honestly say, however, that Orgasmic Birth is the best and most enjoyable birth video I have ever seen. The overall purpose of the film is to encourage women to view birth as an organic process in which they are able to exercise complete control. Stories of several couples are presented to provide proof that this is indeed a possibility. Orgasmic Birth does a wonderful job of including stories and labor experiences that are as intriguing as the title. The first couple we meet is having their baby in their backyard. In the post-labor interview the father explains how much he enjoyed telling his friends that his baby was born “On the deck, 3:00 p.m., on a Sunday.”  I was instantly intrigued.
I Never Grew Up
Birth Documentary Film Festival in Utah May 18th, 2009 in About Me Were you aware: • The Caesarean rate in the US varies from between 25-45 percent depending on what state you’re in, yet our infant mortality rate continues to skyrocket. Doing more Caesareans hasn’t led to more live babies.• Depending on the year the US ranks between 24 and 34 among industrialized nations for infant mortality (i.e., babies dying before age one). • In some states our maternal mortality rate is equivalent to some third-world countries. • We have the best technology in the world for use in pregnancy and childbirth, but the overuse of it–using it on ALL women instead of those considered truly high–risk, is turning a normal physiological process into a medical procedure.
Bonne Nouvelle

“Orgasmic Birth is different than other birth films you’ve seen — it focuses on the sheer physical joys of birth. While we all hear more than enough about the pain of birth, and pain is a real part of birth, we too often forget about the joy, the sexual and sensual pleasures to be had in birth. This is a film about women, about women’s bodies; powerful, ecstatic, glorious, orgasmic bodies! Watch and celebrate!”
