Birth by the Numbers

Video: Birth by the Numbers

Expert Voices

“Births of most women in the United States are pushed and pulled along by multiple medicinal procedures and drugs. All too often, this is a harrowing experience. When women’s innate, hormonally driven capacities are supported, they can instead have powerful, ecstatic and life changing birth experiences while avoiding adverse effects of the interventions. Orgasmic Birth reveals these essential truths.”
Carol Sakala, Director of Programs, Childbirth Connection

Pleasurable Birth in the Press

Submitted by Debra on February 10, 2013 - 9:25pm

In my workshops, I talk about one of my favorite subjects, how to have a Pleasurable Birth. We listen to the sounds of  a woman in labor. This always brings smiles, giggles and moments of intimacy with ourselves and our sexuality as births sounds much like good sex. We talk about sexuality and survivors of sexual abuse, as for many of us our sexuality has not always been all we desired and for many it includes trauma. Birth is an opportunity for healing and sadly, for too many women around the world, it is a time that they once again feel victimized.

Every woman deserves respect, dignity and to birth in a way that preserves and protects her beliefs and values. How has it been that sex and birth have been separated? How has women’s sexuality been repressed in many ways throughout the ages?

How can birth take place in our sexual organs and yet we don’t want to discuss sexuality? If a man were told something would be going on in his penis for 4 – 48 hours but it had nothing to do with sex, would he really believe it and agree?

Many questions to discuss and consider. Yet, to me this is an essential aspect of preparing for childbirth. Recently I enjoyed reading about Pleasurable Birth in the Press and look forward to the discussions that will come out of these publications and links. Here I will share with you:

Beyonce speaks about Sensuality & Birth "When I gave birth, that was the first time I truly let go and surrendered. And it taught me how amazing that feels," the "Crazy in Love" singer tells GQ. "Giving birth made me realize the power of being a woman. I have so much more substance in my life. And expressing that excitement and that sensuality and the connection I have with my husband — I'm a lot more comfortable with that now. I actually feel like my child introduced me to myself."

"Oh baby, yes!" Ina May, & Sarah Buckley MD, & I were honored to be interviewed by Pregnancy & Newborn Magazine for their great article about ecstatic birth.

"Ultimately, that’s what orgasmic birth really means: not just a great feeling, but a great sense of empowerment."

Latham Thomas, an amazing women, doula, teacher, once again inspires me. I was blessed to meet Latham in one of my doula workshops in NYC. Her new book Mama Glow: A Hip Guide to your Fabulous Abundant Pregnancy offers a 3 phase cleanse for the body, mind, and spirit to help you increase your glow power-Glitz, Glimmer, Glow, Cleanse. Here is what Latham has to say about pleasure & pregnancy: "Have Lots of ORGASMS!: That’s right, I said it . . . and I mean it! You know that old adage, “an apple a day”? Well, it applies here, too. I don’t really care how you go about it, as long as you feel safe, empowered, loved, respected, and SEXY! Acknowledge your primal appetite for sensual touch and the erotic. When women climax, the release of en-dorphins is very relaxing—it’s like a tranquilizer. Orgasms regulate your appetite and reduce cravings for junkfood. Those of us who want cookies and ice cream all too often may be craving a different type of sweetness... the kind that comes in the bedroom. Orgasms can also help with pain and stress management. So if you can’t remember the last time you had one, you better get crackin’. If that doesn’t get you glowing I don’t know what will!"
