Consultation

Discuss your findings with your care team, including your healthcare provider, doula, and partner.

Reflect

Consider what aspects of birth are most important to you and what you envision for your birthing experience.

Be Flexible

While it's essential to write and share your ideal preferences, remain open to adjustments. You can have a safe, satisfying birth in any setting or situation when you prepare ahead and ensure your voice and choices are heard and respected. When changes are needed for you or your baby’s safety, having ways to bring love and simple comforts that you have prepared for can make all the difference in how you feel about your birth.

Flexibility and Empowerment

Your baby has their own personality, desires, and path to safety. Maintaining flexibility in your birth vision empowers both you and your baby to navigate whatever circumstances arise during labor. Rather than focusing on what you don’t want, emphasize what you do want. Providers receive birth wishes best when they're positive, enabling them to understand your preferences clearly.

For instance, instead of "I don’t want an IV," consider "I prefer to eat and drink in labor, to move freely, and to use water in a shower and/or tub for comfort."

This approach fosters a sense of responsibility, ensuring hydration and movement, crucial for a smooth labor process.

Stay Positive!

By focusing on positive affirmations, you create an environment filled with optimism and readiness. Trust in the process, and embrace the beauty of co-creating this journey with your baby.

It’s often beneficial to express your thoughts through writing or drawing, focusing on what you most desire in every situation. Your emotions are felt by your baby, and the hormones you flow can enhance your calm, comfort, and love during labor. Regular check-ins with your baby help maintain this positive connection. What do they need for a safe journey to birth? Remember, you're in this together!
