How to Release Shame and Embrace Your Sacred Sexuality

There’s so much shame and taboo in society when it comes to sexuality… particularly women’s sexuality.

This kind of shame is deeply ingrained in us — and so embedded in our stories and culture — that even women who are otherwise incredibly conscious can still sometimes find themselves affected by it.

Unfortunately, sexual shame isn’t something that will just ‘go away’ if you ignore it for long enough… in fact, the opposite is true — this ‘spiritual baggage’ can turn toxic if not dealt with.

Not to mention, it gets heavier and heavier the longer you lug it around, and it can start seeping into every area of your life — including your health, your relationships, your creativity… and yep, you guessed it, even your birth.

So if you know you’ve got some shame to deal with, and are ready to begin releasing it so you can start embracing your sacred sexuality, here are three practical steps to kickstart your journey…

  1. Accept where you’re at.

There’s a funny thing that happens when you’ve got this kind of deep-seated stuff — you get ashamed of having shame. It’s like a big old double-whammy of pain, straight to your soul. To effectively deal with this pain, it’s important to accept yourself exactly as you are — no matter how much you’ve been hurt or let down in the past, and no matter how much you may have hurt or let yourself down. Acceptance is key.

  1. Open Wide to the journey.

The journey through shame requires you to be gentle with yourself, open to possibility, and curious about how you might grow and evolve. Embrace a ‘beginners mind’ and explore yourself fully — your body, your heart, your desires, your pleasure, all of it.

  1. Practice reconnecting.

The fastest way to heal shame is to focus on reconnecting the parts of yourself that are currently feeling blocked, painful and tender. With sexual shame, this can often be a disconnection between your body and other parts of yourself. Therefore anything that gets you in tune and in touch with your body can be incredibly powerful for opening up that connection again. Try starting with self-directed activities like dry body brushing, anointing your body with essential oils, and swimming in the ocean. When you’re ready for the next level of connection, activities like yoga, sensual dance, and full body massage (from a trusted practitioner) can be especially powerful.
