Story in english

Today I danced with Tereza the “Praise to Oxum” in the living room and I felt my heart fill with love, I felt a deep joy. I hold myself in my arms, I hold my daughter in my arms. I felt the room here at home where I gave birth to Tereza and to myself as a mother. I remembered that day. I was 39 weeks pregnant, dealing with anxiety, because I was afraid of passing 40 weeks. Then that last week I started to follow the advice of Natália, one of the midwives who accompanied me. I put myself at ease.

On Saturday I made a lentil pie, Guinho and I watched series and a movie, we made sweet love and went to sleep. I woke up close to midnight, feeling some pressure in the sacrum. I asked Guinho for a massage. I got up: 1, 2, 3 … go!

Levantei: 1, 2, 3… valendo!

The pressure increased, I started to vocalize, and I realized that I was in labor. Guinho called the midwives and my doula Pâmela. We went to shower, and I started to throw up. It was my body that started to cleanse itself for Tereza to pass.

Before the bath, I produced a super strong smell of sweat. Yeah … the hormones were in an uproar.

I put on a white top and a loose-fitting shirt, started to move, sat on the ball. Guinho and my brother started to organize the house. I remembered the lessons learned in the course “From pain to pleasure”, imagining contraction as a wave and not resisting it… opening my mouth wide and vocalizing, since the throat channel is connected to the uterus and would give me more relief.

Fomos tomar banho e eu comecei a vomitar.

O Guinho e o meu irmão começaram a organizar a casa.

Profound freedom

I had an experience of profound freedom during my labor. I vocalized, grunted, screamed, sang, pooed, peed, threw myself, napped, kissed on the mouth. I did what I wanted, without worrying about what they were looking at. Everything I did was very different from what I usually do. I connected myself with the wild woman that I am. She broke out, she broke free.

Mayara, the other midwife, suggested that I had some contact with water. Then my brother and Guinho filled the pool. A detail: my brother put water so hot that the plastic pool deflated a little, but it didn’t puncture. In the water the contractions were lighter. I had moments of great relaxation. Ah, I skipped a part … before that, I thought I was going to give birth on the stool. It was almost 5 a.m. and I had already reached 10 cms dilation, but it was a false alarm. Soon after Mayara arrived. I think Tereza waited for her to be born.

Profunda liberdade

Meu irmão e o Guinho encheram a piscina.

Strong and Capable

Back to the water: in the pool I pushed hard, but I didn’t feel any progress. Guinho threw water on my back, Pamela threw smoke on my head, the midwives asked me to pull a fabric when I felt the contractions, but I knew that Tereza would not be born in the water. Mayara then suggested that I get out of the pool, and I when I was on hands and knees, I received a nice massage from everyone. On all fours, I felt that Tereza was going to be born. I was facing the front door, where there was an offer to Exu.

“It’s already possible to see the hair,” the midwives said. And I thought: “now I’m going to give birth to this girl”. “And that is the pushing out, Cláudia”. I felt the head coming out. I vocalized with all my strength. Natália was in front of me, with an encouraging look. Everything was fine. I was in my house, where I grew up and was raised. I was next to Guinho, my love, who supported me throughout my pregnancy and labor. I was well assisted with the midwives, the doula, my sister friends. My parents were around. My brother.

I felt strong and capable. There was little left, and after some pushing, Tereza’s little body also came out. Guinho took our daughter, took the cord ring and handed it to me. I took my big, slippery baby in my arms. I looked at her face, I smelled her smell, I cried, I cried with joy. Pamela opened the curtain in the living room and through the window I saw my parents and my brother, who were crying with emotion, happy. I already wanted to get up with the little one, but Pâmela reminded me: “wait for the placenta to be born, sister”. A little later, the placenta also left. And I thanked that “spirit-organ” that had nourished my daughter. I gave birth welcomed and supported by the forces of the Great Spirit and my ancestors, surrounded by the love of my partner, my parents, brother, sisters. Safe with the assistance of Natália, Mayara and Pâmela. I gave birth trusting my power. I accessed a part of me that I knew little about, and I liked it.

Sentia forte e capaz

Senti sair a cabeça. Estava bem assistida com as parteiras, a doula, minhas amigas irmãs. Meus pais estavam por perto. Meu irmão.

Eu me sentia forte e capaz. Guinho pegou a nossa filha, tirou a circular de cordão e me entregou. Peguei a minha bebê grande, escorregadia.

Safe and loved

Other beautiful moments of my labor: when I wrapped myself in Guinho’s arms … the way he looked at me and touched me made me feel really loved and safe. Another thing: at first, I didn’t want my mom to be home. I thought she was going to be nervous, but in the end, she didn’t go to my aunt’s house as agreed, and it was good. There was a certain moment when I asked her to bring the image of “Nossa Senhora Aparecida” to the room. The patron saint of our family. Another moment was when Ginho and I sang “Ponto da vó Maria Conga”… my brother cooking for everyone … I didn’t eat as I imagined, but I drank a lot of orange and carrot juice with honey.

Amada e segur
