Big Medicine’s blowback on home births

Big Medicine’s blowback on home births A recent op-ed in the LA Times by author Jennifer Block provides much to consider:  Why do U.S. doctors strong-arm women into our standard maternity care system? http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/sunday/commentary/la-oe-block9-2008j…   In her typical style, Jennifer Block clearly states the issues and has us consider: “If these groups were truly making maternal and child health a priority, they’d be reforming standard maternity care, not strong-arming women into it.”   With rising cesarean sections rates, increasing maternal mortality, and general rates of interventions that far exceed what the scientific research supports as safe and effective for women and babies, it is time we focus on offering options that are safe and supported by the data,  rather than limiting women’s choices and seeking legislation that violates women’s rights to informed decision making about her body and her care during pregnancy and birth.
